Motivasi di baliknya adalah untuk mendorong pendeteksi tepi agar dapat menyamai penglihatan manusia yang mampu selalu menghasilkan tepi berputar tertutup. Dua aksioma tepi disajikan, yaitu representasi tepi sebagai garis berputar tertutup dan karakteristiknya yang tipis. Serangkaian fitur dan pendekatan dihasilkan dalam penelitian ini untuk memungkinkan pengukuran peta tepi. Eksperimen menunjukkan bahwa pendeteksi tepi saat ini masih kesulitan untuk menyamai penglihatan manusia dalam mengenali tepi. Eksperimen juga membuktikan bahwa pendekatan statistik berdasarkan ukuran objek memberikan pengukuran kinerja terbaik di antara pendekatan lainnya.
