The development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology is now used not only to create photo filters or answer questions on mobile phones. More broadly, AI plays a significant role in protecting our planet, one way being by helping large factories conserve energy.
This fascinating topic was thoroughly explored at the 2026 International Webinar held by the Study Program of Informatics Engineering, Faculty of Science & Technology, Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University (UIN) Malang on Friday (May 22nd). The webinar, titled “AI in Industrial Energy Management,” featured two experts in their fields.
The keynote speaker was Atit Bashyal, PhD, a researcher and lecturer from Constructor University, Germany. The interactive discussion was moderated by Linda Salma Angreani, PhD, a lecturer in Informatics Engineering at UIN Malang.
In his simple presentation, Dr. Atit explained that large-scale factories and industries consume an extraordinary amount of electricity every day. If not managed properly, besides being expensive, wasteful energy use also negatively impacts the environment and accelerates climate change.
This is where AI comes in as a solution. Imagine AI as a “super-smart assistant” that can tirelessly monitor all the machines in a factory 24/7. AI can collect data, predict when electricity usage will spike, and determine when machines should operate optimally or take a break to prevent wasted energy.
“AI can read very complex data patterns, which may be invisible to the human eye. This way, energy management systems in industry become much more efficient,” he explained.
The event was enthusiastically received by participants from various backgrounds, from schoolchildren to technology practitioners. This topic was deliberately raised so that the younger generation, both those still in school and university, realize that learning technology such as coding and mathematics is not just limited to classroom theory but can be applied to solve real-world problems in the industrial world.
Through this webinar, UIN Malang hopes to continue to broaden the wider community’s understanding of the importance of collaboration between technology and environmental sustainability for a greener future. For those who missed the excitement, the complete discussion can still be watched again on the official YouTube channel of Informatics Engineering UIN Malang.
